The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it must comply with special requirements. In other words, all .MOBI websites need to be built to be opened flawlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the .MOBI Registry. These incorporate how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.

The restrictions have provoked some worries as the generic top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices need to be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be built in such a way as to be accessed by most web browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
