Secure Shell, commonly known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol that is used to execute commands on a remote server or to exchange data between a server and a client. As the data exchanged by the 2 sides is encrypted, a 3rd party can't intercept it, which makes SSH a favored means of handling a website hosting account. The commands which may be executed depend on the type of hosting service. On a shared web server, for instance, the alternatives are limited as you won't have root access to the hosting server, so you may only create/move/delete files, set up and unpack archives, export and import databases, and so on. They're all actions that are performed within the shared hosting account and do not need a higher level of access. Using a virtual or a dedicated server, you'll be able to set up server-side software or to restart the server or only a specific service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted via a command line, and if you do not use a UNIX-like Operating System, there are a number of apps for other OSs, you can use to connect to the remote web server as well.

SSH Telnet in Shared Hosting

If the shared hosting package that you’ve chosen through the signup procedure includes SSH access as standard, you shall be able to activate this feature with just a mouse click from your Hepsia Control Panel. In case you have chosen a different package, the SSH access feature can be included through the Upgrades menu and it'll become available at once. The information you need to connect shall be conveniently listed inside the SSH section of the CP - the hostname, the username and the port number. You could also set what password to use from the same location and you will be able to change it at any time. All the commands that are allowed are listed in the Help articles which we have prepared for you, along with examples of the syntax that you should use. An additional advantage of permitting SSH access to your account is that you will be able to upload files using an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is included by default with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you are able to include it from the hosting CP if required - even just for the current month. In any case, you are able to activate and de-activate the function with only one mouse click through the SSH section of the CP. In the same location, you will find the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You shall also find a box where you can type in the password you want to use, as it doesn't need to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better protection, you may also change it as frequently as you need. A complete list of the commands that can be executed in a semi-dedicated account is provided in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and a few examples. An extra function after SSH access is allowed shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client which supports this sort of connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Servers

All our VPS server solutions provide SSH access as standard, so you won't have to add any upgrades or enable anything - the moment the server is set up and you receive its login information, you shall be able to connect via its main IP address and the login credentials which you have chosen during the signup process. Since the VPS accounts come with full root-level access, there aren't any restrictions regarding the commands which you may run. Your server shall be isolated from the other ones on the physical machine, so you will be able to manage just about everything through a command line, including server-side software installations and reboots. That way, you'll be able to work with your files, databases and any apps which you install in a fast and safe way.
